Robredo Nagtanong Kung Ano Na Bang Nangyare Sa Bansa At Kung San Na Nga Ba Ito Tutungo?

Robredo Nagtanong Kung Ano Na Bang Nangyare Sa Bansa At Kung San Na Nga Ba Ito Tutungo?

These are the questions that Vice President Leni Robredo posed last Saturday because of the lack of concern for human rights. It has been 30 years after the ‘Human Rights Constitution’ or the 1987 Constitution took effect. But the Vice President is concerned that many are compromising the human rights establishment just because of promises.

While she was giving her speech as she awaited the 2018 Liberal International Prize for Freedom to detained Senator Leila De Lima, she pointed out that many Filipinos are being blinded by promises of security and safety that they have already forgotten the human rights.

“After decades of demonstrating leadership when it comes to human rights, we now realize that in the Philippines today, the way Filipinos understand human rights is still largely dependent on the actions of the powerful,” Robredo said.

During the State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte this year, he pointed out that the campaign and war against illegal drugs will be as ‘relentless’ and ‘chilling’ as Day 1.

He stated, “Your concern is human rights, mine is human lives. The lives of our youth are being wasted and families are destroyed, and all because of the chemicals called shabu, cocaine, cannabis, and heroine.”

But Robredo pointed out that the statement of the President is ‘false and misleading dichotomy’.

“Our right to live is enshrined in the law, and this is the anchor of the entire framework of human rights. The right to life, along with all other rights—to food, to shelter, to education, to healthcare—are indivisible, interdependent, and interrelated,” Robredo said.

“We must make our people further understand that every human being is entitled to these rights, and that fulfilling the rights of some, at the cost of stripping away the rights of others, is precisely the injustice that the concept of human rights was established to correct,” she added.
